Aging gracefully and maintaining a healthy appearance over the years is something many strive for, and there are a plethora of anti-aging products and treatments that can help with this goal. But did you know that your genes will also have a huge impact on how well you will age?
A recent presentation at the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting highlighted the differences in facial aging between a variety of ethnic groups—and there were some key differences. Here is what the study found.
Your ethnicity plays a role in how you will age
The study looked at a sample of over 4,000 participants spanning 4 different countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, and the results may surprise you.
- People with non-white, African, or black ancestries aged at a slower rate than those with lighter skin types.
- Darker-toned participants reported less severity in a variety of aging features, including the appearance and frequency of nasolabial folds and forehead lines.
- Signs of aging appeared at a later age for non-white participants.
Regardless of whether you are lucky enough to have genes that help your skin age slowly, this information is helpful in choosing appropriate anti-aging medicine for your unique skin type. Knowing more about your ethnic background can help your doctor understand what issues your skin is most likely to have and assist them in recommending the right products, treatments, and preventative measures.
