The holidays are almost upon us, and while this time of year is mostly merry and bright, it also provides a lot of downtime for the kiddos—which can feel a bit chaotic.
Looking to curb the boredom with some holiday cheer? There are plenty of kid-friendly activities that will make this Christmas break one to remember.
Make sure they’re on the nice list
It’s just not Christmas without a visit to Santa Claus—and there’s no better opportunity than the third annual Winter Wonderland at Van Saun County Park. After having a heart to heart with Old Saint Nick, keep the kids entertained (and worn out) with holiday themed games, ice skating, and food trucks.
Don’t worry, mom and dad, you won’t be left out: adults can enjoy their favorite beverage at the “ice bar” and beer garden.
Hop on the Polar Express
Just outside of Bergen County, you can partake in one of the best holiday activities for kids: a ride on the Polar Express. This train ride will have your kids captivated by the sights, sounds, and story behind this Christmas class. Make sure to get tickets now, as a number of slots are already sold out.

Visions of the Sugar Plum Fairy dancing in their heads
Take in the sights and sounds of the season with a holiday classic, The Nutcracker. This popular Russian ballet will captivate the whole family with a story that brings magic to this time of year. Plus, this year’s performance include the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.
Shows are running through December 27th, so purchase your tickets now for a fun night out between Christmas and New Year.

Break tradition and try some local tasty treats
Got a budding chef or baker on your hands? Making gingerbread cookies is always fun, but if you want to get out of the house and see some extraordinarily beautiful cakes and confections, head over to Kook Hwa Bakery. There is something on the menu for everyone, from fresh made mochi to bubble tea, and you’ll love trying out traditional Korean flavors.
Get outside on foot, bikes, or skis at one of Bergen County’s parks
Got a kid that simply can’t sit still? Bundling up for some outdoor time is a great way to work out some of your kids’ energy and pull them away from their screens. They’ll come home all tuckered out and a mug of hot chocolate tastes even better after being out in the chilly air. Great options include skiing at Campgaw Mountain—even the littlest kids can get a ski lesson—or a stroll through Borg’s Woods Nature Preserve. If it isn’t icy, you can hop on your bikes and ride a nearby section of the Saddle River County Park Bike Path, which passes right through Paramus.
