This month’s featured patients address the topic of neck contouring. An attractive neck is seen as something very desirable—one that is long and slender, with smooth skin and a defined jaw line and chin. This appearance conveys youth, beauty, and femininity.
Patient #1
As demonstrated by Patient #1, patients who have excess fatty tissue in the neck, but good skin tone, can be treated effectively with liposuction. Unwanted fat is effectively suctioned from the neck with a small instrument through tiny incisions. Because the patient has good skin tone, the skin adapts and conforms to the newly created shape of the neck. Patients with a weak chin, such as this one, also benefit from insertion of a silicone chin implant. This enhances the result of neck contouring by creating a stronger chin and better defined jaw line, adding to better aesthetic harmony of the face and neck.
Patient #2
Patient #2, though similar in age to Patient #1, has very little excess fat in the neck. Instead, the problem here is loose skin and laxity of the underlying platysma muscle, which runs from the bottom of the chin to the top of the chest. Unlike Patient #1, liposuction alone was not the answer. Patient #2 needed a neck lift to get the desired improvement. This meant Dr. Parker needed to make incisions hidden behind the ears to lift and tighten the underlying lax platysma muscle with sutures and then remove the excess skin. Further details about neck contouring and the various options for treatment such as liposuction, neck lift and chin augmentation are discussed in detail in our newly designed procedure page titled “Neck Contouring.”
