Does Loose Skin Eventually Tighten After Weight Loss?

After significant weight loss, men are often left with a tremendous amount of loose, sagging skin around many different parts of the body, including the back, chest, arms, thighs, and abdomen. In addition to being unattractive, excess skin can cause irritation, hygiene issues, and problems finding clothing that fits properly.

Unfortunately, neither diet nor exercise can tighten or diminish this excess, loose skin. The only treatment option is to have it safely removed and the body re-contoured by a qualified plastic surgeon.

How Much Does Surgery After Weight Loss Cost?

Dr. Parker creates customized surgical plans for post-weight loss patients, so the cost of your body contouring surgery depends on the extent of the operation and which procedures he performs. We provide an estimated price quote after your consultation, which you can review without pressure before making your decision.

When Should You Get Skin Removal Surgery?

During your consultation, Dr. Parker will discuss the best procedure options for you. These surgeries are most often performed one year after gastric bypass surgery or when weight loss has plateaued for 3 to 6 months. Dr. Parker performs all of these procedures at his onsite, fully accredited, Medicare-certified, outpatient surgical facility, Surgiplex, LLC.

Surgery After Weight Loss Options

Men have differing needs for body contouring surgery to lift and tighten specific areas of the body. In general, these combination surgeries include one or more of the following procedures:

Body Lift

The midsection is often a trouble spot for men who lose substantial weight. Excess skin hangs from the torso, hips, buttocks, and outer and inner thighs. Whether you accomplished weight loss through lifestyle changes, medication, bariatric surgery, or some combination, the excess skin left behind can be extremely frustrating.

This extensive procedure—which is also called a circumferential body lift because it involves an incision that extends from the lower abdomen to the lower back—combines a tummy tuck with an outer thigh and buttock lift to remove excess skin, tighten the abdominal muscles, and restore a smoother, more natural-looking body contour. This is the most extensive post-weight loss surgery option available.

Upper Arm Lift

Sagging skin on the upper arms after weight loss—sometimes referred to as “bat wings”—is a common concern. Men who are self-conscious about wearing short-sleeve shirts or tank tops feel more comfortable with the appearance of their arms after undergoing an arm lift. Also called brachioplasty, an upper arm lift involves Dr. Parker making an incision that extends from the elbow to the armpit on the inside of the arm.

Thigh Lift

Excess skin on the upper leg is more than a cosmetic concern for many men after losing significant weight. Chafing caused by the skin of both legs rubbing together can pose a risk of infection. Inner (medial) thigh lift incisions are shorter than for a lateral (outer) thigh lift. In this technique, called a crescent thigh lift, Dr. Parker makes the incisions in the crease of the groin so they are easily concealed, then uses these incisions to remove excess skin.

When finished, he closes the incisions with sutures. After completing the procedure, we have the patient wear a compression garment that decreases swelling and aids in the natural shrinking and tightening of the skin. Thigh lift procedures are performed as outpatient surgery using a general anesthetic or intravenous sedation.

Male Breast Reduction

Even though male breast reduction is often performed for men and adolescent boys with overdeveloped breast tissue—a condition called gynecomastia—it’s also effective for men who have lost weight and want to have a more masculine-looking chest.

Liposuction alone is often an effective technique for gynecomastia patients, but men who have lost significant weight require skin removal surgery1. The incisions used for the procedure depend on the severity of the sagging skin.

The incision options for removing excess skin include:

Periareolar Incision

If you have a moderate amount of excess skin, Dr. Parker makes an incision that encircles the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple.) The resulting scar is virtually imperceptible because it blends with the darker areola skin.

Horizontal Incision with Nipple Translocation

In patients with significant breast skin excess, called “pseudogynecomastia,” Dr. Parker excises the excess skin as a horizontal ellipse, leaving a resultant scar in the inframammary crease. He then translocates the nipple and areola upward from their descended location on the chest wall into a normal position.

Dr. Parker closes these incisions with several layers of absorbable sutures to help minimize the visibility of the scars. This procedure is an aggressive removal of excess skin, which is only performed in patients after significant weight loss and markedly lax breast skin.
